Welcome to AZAB 2015, the 2,400 mile ocean race, in the unlikely event of you sailing in a straight line!

Having enjoyed my first AZAB Race in 2011, I now find myself as Race Director of 2015.

Colin Drummond a founder /competitor of the AZAB in 1973 has passed the Race Director baton to me and has threatened to race again in 2015.

It is an international ocean race for all comers, from experienced yachtsmen sailing 60 footers to the inexperienced guys like me with smallish boats. I had never raced my Moody 336 or sailed further than Brittany!

In 7 days the Cape to Rio Race starts. It has been created to encourage South-African yachtsmen to participate in large off-shore races after the corrected time win of Bruce Dalling (SA) in OSTAR 1968. In the Cape to Rio the boats are crewed and usually head north in search of the trade winds around the St. Helena high.

During the delivery back to Brest from the Transat Jacques Vabre Bernard Stamm had to be rescued 200nm off Cornwall. Previously, he and his co-skipper have lost the mast and the boat finally sank. That boat was just opposite Ntombifuti during my stop-over in Brest. It's humbling to see that this happens even to the most experienced skippers. The wind blew with 35kn, this is rough but every off-shore sailor has seen worse. And still.
