Leg 1, Days 5-6-7
Leg 1 Day 5
Saw a whale spouting and then its tail as it dived. It was a 200yds away so I did not feel too threatened. Through the day the wind veered to NNE and in the evening picked up from the light airs of the day to reach 20k.
Leg 1 Day 6
Awoke to find a large spinnaker in my rear view mirror. Hurriedly took down the No3 jib and hoisted my own spinnaker. The sail was Tamarind, a 42ft Formosa, also sailed single-handed. We spoke on the radio and Mervyn said he would pass my position back to the race office via Portishead Radio and his SSB transceiver. No other AZAB boats in VHF range. I soon pulled away from her and was once again in my own private piece of ocean. Decided that if Mervyn could fly his huge masthead kite at night I should be able to handle Hakuna's relatively tiny one.
Leg 1 Day 7
It may have been a mistake. Just after midnight I suffered a mega spinnaker wrap which took an hour to sort out. Poled out the No1 till morning.
Spinnaker up all day again with the wind very slowly veering to ExN by midnight.
